Galphena

Occupied by
Because of its extreme tilt, the only area that one can really call habitable on Galphena is the strip of land along the equator. The rest of the planet is either scorched or frozen solid, although rich in rare minerals.

Detailed info

It is said, that when this planet was first encountered in OT-3929 by Cortex’s espionage and infiltration team heading towards Veziri Prime, its acting commander, Bellum Order’s Master Navigator Dromm Eckhart was asked by Mantleguard Baron Jorven Hale whether they had resources to secure Galphena on the way, what would make a prime regrouping point for future expansion or even their current campaign. The official message that came back from the Bellum officer, of all people, ended a rather concerning list of hazards with:

“Sir, while I’m positive we can conquer Galphena, I’m obliged to say that it’s also an option NOT to conquer Galphena, which presents itself as a way less costly endeavour.”

Galphena travels the space tilted around 81°, creating various, volatile environments and putting up a challenge to anyone stubborn enough to try and conquer it. Extreme seasons lash the planet with conditions that render most parts unable to sustain any ecosystem, one of its poles scorched in perpetual daylight lasting for its whole cycle around the white dwarf, Yunko, while the other half withers in total darkness. The only area that one can really call habitable is the strip of land along the equator, around 2000 kilometers wide, which experiences a more balanced day/night cycle, albeit in turn is bordered by most unpredictable and powerful winds. The settlers by default stick to the equatorial area and try to capitalise on the amplitudes and the tides, stretching the colonies like pipelines and in turn making the equatorial strip look like a badly stitched wound.

Unbeknownst to officer Eckhart at that time, Galphena’s dual nature and volatility give birth to some rare circuitry minerals, different ones depending on the hemisphere as well, so although it takes some effort, controlling the planet gives a considerable edge in silicon-dependant reality.
